Bearings
Three-digit compass bearings: always clockwise from north. Combine with trig and Pythagoras for navigation problems.
01
Bearing rules
- Bearings are measured **clockwise** from **north**.
- Always written as 3 digits: 045°, 230°, 005°.
- Back-bearing rule: opposite direction = bearing ± 180° (modulo 360°).
Always sketch! North line at every reference point keeps signs straight.
02
Triangulating a position
Find distance
From port A, a ship sails 30 km on bearing 060° to point B. Find how far north of A the ship is.
- Bearing 060° is 60° east of north.
- North component: km.
